Software plays an important role in many inventions, but is not patentable as a pure source code (subject matter expressly excluded from patent protection).

However, if the software represents a computer-implemented invention that relates to a - protectable - technical context, patenting is possible. This means that the software must be embedded in a technical environment and achieve a further technical effect that goes beyond the ordinary interaction between program and computer.
